The other day, Reader, I asked a client a question—one that made her cry. And then I made a mistake. HUGE. I knew my very strong, very smart client was uncomfortable. That wasn't a mistake--that was good. (Honestly, that's a big, weird part of my job as a professional coach. If I'm not challenging you to get more comfortable being uncomfortable, I'm not doing my job.) No, my mistake wasn't in asking the hard question. I made a mistake when I didn't pause long enough to let her figure out what the tears were trying to tell her. I darn well know that ANY strong emotion is a signal to slow down and ask "what else could this mean?" It's rarely about the issue on the table. But in my interest to keep my client on schedule, I didn't stop and look under the table. 🙃 This is a rookie mistake in my business—the business of helping people grow by seeing themselves more clearly than ever before. And believe me, by admitting it to you, I've bumped up the odds that I won't make that mistake again. Career mistakes aren't fatal flaws. They're invitations to get uncomfortable, reboot and move ahead. In thinking about my own errors, I've written about the common ones I see with high-performing professionals like you. Plus, I've included scripts and strategies to turn that mistake around, fast. READ "5 Career Mistakes You’re Making (But Breathe. All Can Be Fixed)" So how 'bout you, Reader?
