So Reader, if you've read these newsletters for a while or read my book, you know that I'm a big fan of paying attention not just to your thoughts, but to your emotions. Which, to be fair, many of us are taught to ignore, to push down, to avoid altogether—especially in our world of work. 💔 When you're a leader, the emotional expectations are even higher:
In short, leadership has become harder because the emotional labor required has become harder. But there's help. My friend Dina Denham Smith and her co-author Alicia Grandy have written a guide for leaders on how to navigate this tricky landscape. The book's called "Emotionally Charged: How to Lead in the New World of Work." Dina and I sat down recently to talk about it: The book's a powerhouse of strategies and myth-busting about how to handle emotion in today's workplace—not only that of others, but yours, too. I'm such a fan of this book, that I'm giving away a free hardcover copy to one lucky reader! 📘 ✅ To enter, just hit REPLY and tell me about a time when YOU were emotionally charged (however you define it). Tell me what happened, what you did about it, how it turned out and what you learned. Doesn't have to be pretty or perfect--just honest! I'll draw randomly from all the people who share a story before 12 noon Eastern on September 30. No need to write a novel unless you're inspired to--just a few lines are fine! In the meantime, I hope you'll check out my chat with Dina and pick up the book. Our emotions put us in motion, and the more we understand & appreciate them (vs push against them), the smoother we can soar in our life at work. 🦸🏻♀️ Thanks for being here! P.S. Interested in more resources on this topic of emotion at work? A couple of my popular posts are this video describing emotional labor and this article on what to do when your buttons are pushed. Have a question about your own situation? Hit REPLY and ask. I'm always happy to connect with you here in our Insider community, 'cause I'm not virtual, I'm real. 😇 --D |
