"When the world settles down," the unhappy leader told me, "then I'll make my move." ↗️ I didn't mean to laugh. Really, I didn't. In fact, I might have accidentally snorted. 😜 Gathering myself, I apologized and shared what I know to be true: that "the world" will never settle down. In fact, it's the nature of worlds to change, whether we're thinking about the spinning globe we live on 🌏 or the world of our department during the merger talks 📊. So postponing career decisions for some magic moment in time is only a mask for procrastination. Sorry. But here's the good news. Contrary to popular belief, most career decisions are not like tattoos. We imagine they're permanent, forever inked into our body and mind.🖋️ We think they'll be painful to undo. 😰 But that's just not true. Just look at Andy. Four years ago, Andy left his company feeling overlooked and stuck. He jumped to a new organization, hoping for a fresh start—and on paper, it was. New people, new challenges, new turf. But after a few months, that old familiar feeling crept in. Everything had changed… and yet, nothing had. Through our coaching conversations, Andy began to see his situation differently. He realized he'd written off opportunities at his old company that, with a different approach, might have played out another way. So he made a fresh decision: he called up his former boss and invited him out for a drink. That conversation sparked another—and eventually, an offer. Andy returned to his former company, this time on his own terms. If you'd asked him four years ago, he would've told you leaving was a tattoo—permanent, with no painless way back. But with a new mindset and fresh insight, he made the next decision that fit who he’d become. You always have the power to make the next decision.
