making big choices

Darcy Eikenberg at improv

Some of you know that for the past year, I've been performing improv with my local community theater company. 🎭

I'm the oldest troupe member with the least experience 😇, so I'm in full-on learning mode. That's why I try to take a class whenever I can, preferably at places I can work with a teacher in person, rather than at the University of YouTube.

Recently, I took a class with nationally known improv teacher David Christopher (he's the finger pointer above).

It's always fascinating to work with a pro--and my brain instantly goes to figuring out what's the difference between my mediocre performance and his knock-it-out-of-the-park energy.

During this class, one of the coaching notes that I got was to "make bigger choices."

Say what??

I thought it was big enough to get up on that stage. To react and respond and not think too much or plan ahead too much.

But David could see that I could go bigger.

More risk. More emotion. More movement. More ❤️.

So I ran the scene again.

And I played it bigger.

It felt . . .uncomfortable. Of course it did.

But it worked.

More interesting. More watchable. More human.

It got me thinking about what keeps us from making big choices in our lives and careers.

Because a big choice doesn't have to be jumping up on stage.

It might be having the tough conversation. Saying the thing everyone's thinking. Asking the question that's being ignored.

There's a kazillion other big choices you can make. Maybe you're already making them and not giving yourself enough credit. Hit REPLY and tell me the ones you're making--or considering right now. (I try hard to respond to every note you send, so don't leave me wondering out here--I love to hear from you.)

As we move into official summer in my part of the world, it's a good time to rethink where we've been making choices that really need to be bigger, more intentional, more helpful. I'm here to help you when you're ready, and I know you can make the big choices that are right for you, Reader, 'cause you deserve to soar.

Always, Darcy
